From a new perspective
Recognising the potential
A technological revolution in the area of in vitro animal cell culture has been in progress in recent years. New insights regarding structures, features, and cultivation techniques for mammalian cells have paved the way for the development of new strategies to generate biologicals and research concepts based on mass cultivation. Important areas of study such as virology, oncology, immunology, somatic cell genetics, and developmental biology have recognised the potential which lies in the growth of in vitro cells thus providing answers to the numerous questions which arise from their respective topics.
The cultivation of stem cells generates high expectations in view of their potential clinical applications. On the other hand, many of today’s – and tomorrow’s – genetically engineered products, which range from vaccines to immunologicals, enzymes and hormones, are synthesised by cultured mammalian cells at industrial scale.
